CBD Oil treatment for Heart Disease, Strokes -- News, information, studies

Heart disease is the no. 1 killer in the US and other countries – so it’s little surprise that many everyday folks are looking to prevent heat disease or at least minimize the ill effects of those already diagnosed with a heart condition.

Of course, over-the-counter CBD products – for heart disease or otherwise – are, as of 2020, still not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), though this begins to change in the middle of that year when new promised guidelines for production, distribution and sale of CBD oil products are released.

As adherents of CBD oil’s healing properties know, this cannabinoid is particularly effective in treating inflammation as well as working as an antioxidant. These properties can in turn lead to a reduction in risk factors triggered by these conditions – but the real culprit in most heart disease cases has to do with high blood pressure.

So does CBD oil work for high blood pressure? Research undertaken in the United Kingdom in 2012 resulted in a very influential paper entitled “Is the cardiovascular system a therapeutic target for cannabidiol?” found that “Accumulating evidence now also suggests that CBD is beneficial in the cardiovascular system. CBD has direct actions on isolated arteries, causing both acute and time-dependent vasorelaxation…” This study even included data on in vitro intubation with CBD in laboratory rodents.

One oft-cited study of 2017 using human volunteers showed that CBD lowered high blood pressure in stressful sitations. ON the other hand, a survey review of 25 studies completed in that same year could not record a causal correlation between CBD dosage and heart disease control.

A handful of studies have also been performed on laboratory rodents with regard to using CBD for stroke prevention or recovery. Survey reviews done in 2010 and 2017 both showed a tendency for CBD to increase blood flow to the brain, useful in both prevention of and recovery from a stroke event – but virtually no testing on human subjects acceptable by the USFDA.

The good news here is that, since the 2018 Farm Bill opened markets in the US to hemp- and cannabis-based products, CBD oil products for heart disease are widely available – over the counter, so it’s up to the individual patient to determine quality of product and dosage. Be sure to do your homework vis-à-vis producers of a given product, and always track your doses until an appropriate measure is found.
